Magnesium Plant
Plant Optimisation Study and Controls Evaluation
Rowley, Utah
In a plant optimization study, Roberts & Schaefer examined
over 100 different processes at Magcorp's Rowley, Utah magnesium
plant, to identify ways that they could be improved. The Rowley
plant is the largest magnesium producer in North America. Each
process was examined based on maintenance records and plant goals,
and results were presented in a standard format. For each system,
the study recommended that it either be eliminated as being uneconomical,
adjusted, modified, or replaced. R&S prepared estimates and
the necessary drawings, and provided construction supervision
and system startup services. The study produced improvements in
plant quality control, efficiency, and safety, and presented the
information in a way that enabled down time planning, capital cost
planning, and the use of plant technicians.
Roberts & Schaefer also prepared a controls evaluation, to
develop a five year plan for total renovation of plant control
systems. The study addressed, evaluated, and presented issues
specific to Magcorp's goals. The study examined four different
manufacturers, recommended and justified a specific manufacturer
and the system to be used, detailed a five-year plan, and considered
the associated costs. The study provided Magcorp with a bankable
Plan of Execution document and allowed smaller projects to progress
immediately, in a direction consistent with the long-term plan
for plant improvement.
Magcorp adopted the study's recommendations, and found the equipment
specified to be of good value and appropriate to the application.
R&S continues to provide engineering services to Magcorp,
to identify quick changeover methods throughout the plant.
