Kerr-McGee
Coal Corporation
Gillette, Wyoming
For a major expansion to their Jacobs Ranch Mine, Kerr-McGee
Coal Corporation selected Roberts & Schaefer for detailed
engineering and procurement assistance under an "engineering
only" contract. The expansion included a truck dump, a crushing
station, 54-inch wide mid-drive storage conveyor, silo top transfer
conveyors, and head house modifications.
Dump
trucks take the run-of-mill coal to the truck dump. A drag conveyor
feeds the crushing station at 2,400 tph. A Triple Roll Crusher
converts the ROM coal to a more uniform 2-inch product. The crushed
coal travels via conveyor to one of seven existing 15,000-ton
storage silos from which unit trails are flood-loaded.
The new equipment on top of the silos added significant loads
to these existing structures. To allow completion of the construction
without having to perform work inside the silos, R&S designed
a system of girders above the silo roofs. As an additional benefit,
the external construction required a minimum of down time for existing
coal loading operations.
